The Location

Arts and Entertainment

The Houston Theater District, located downtown, is home to nine major performing arts organizations and six performance halls. It is the second-largest concentration of theater seats in a downtown area in the United States. Houston is one of few US cities with permanent, professional and resident companies in all major performing arts disciplines: opera (Houston Grand Opera), ballet (Houston Ballet), music (Houston Symphony Orchestra) and theater (The Alley Theatre). Houston is also home to folk artists, art groups and various small progressive arts organizations.

The Museum District's cultural institutions and exhibits attract more than 7 million visitors a year. Notable facilities include The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, and the Station Museum of Contemporary Art.

Houston has the greatest area of green space and parks of the 10 most populous cities in the US and is home to 337 parks. Hermann Park features the Houston Zoo and the Houston Museum of Natural Science, other outdoor attractions include: Terry Hershey Park, Lake Houston Park, Memorial Park, Tranquility Park, Sesquicentennial Park, Discovery Green, and Sam Houston Park. The Lee and Joe Jamail Skatepark is one of the largest skateparks in Texas consisting of 30,000 square foot in-ground facility. The Wet'n'Wild SplashTown is a water park located north of Houston. There are over 160 golf courses in Houston so getting a tee time shouldn't be an issue. If you prefer water sports, you would be hard pressed to find a more ideal locale for beauty and fun than the Houston Bay Area.

Houston is home to the Houston Astros (Major League Baseball), the Houston Rockets (National Basketball Association), the Houston Texans (National Football League) and The Houston Dynamo Major League Soccer franchise.


Houston offers many and varied opportunities for higher learning. The University of Houston is a nationally recognized Tier One research university, and is the third-largest university in Texas. The University of Houston–Clear Lake and the University of Houston–Downtown are stand-alone universities; not branch campuses of the University of Houston. Texas Southern University is one of the largest historically black colleges and universities in the United States and Rice University is one of the leading teaching and research universities of the United States and ranked the nation's 17th best overall university by U.S. News & World Report.

All public school systems in Texas are administered by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). There are many public school districts serving the city of Houston. The largest school district serving the city limits is the Houston Independent School District, which serves a large majority of the area within the city limits. A portion of west Houston falls under the Spring Branch and Alief independent school districts. Houston has numerous private schools of all types, including non-sectarian, Jewish, Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Protestant, and Muslim.
