The Location

Austin is the state capital of Texas, located in the eastern part of Texas Hill Country. The city was founded as "Waterloo," and renamed for Stephen F. Austin, a Texas colonist. With more than 1.9 million residents in the metropolitan area, Austin is America's 11th-largest city and was the third fastest-growing city in the United States from 2013 to 2014. It is also one of the safest, consistently ranking among America's safest cities. Education, government, technology and healthcare make up the majority of Austin's economy.

Arts and Entertainment

There is no shortage of art and culture in Austin. The city is known as the "live music capital of the world," with more than 250 venues throughout the city. It hosts the annual Austin City Limits Music Festival in October, which draws 75,000 people each day, and the South by Southwest (SXSW) Music, Film and Interactive Conferences and Festivals. Austin is home to a variety of entertainment districts for those who wish to enjoy the city's vibrant dining, shopping and nightlife scenes.

Residents enjoy approximately 300 sunny days each year and an average year-round temperature of 70 degrees. Outdoor enthusiasts will benefit from the city's abundant recreational activities at its lakes and 251 parks, including boating, swimming, biking and hiking. It is no wonder Austin is ranked one of the nation's fittest cities.

Education

Austin's public elementary and secondary schools are served by the Austin Independent School District. Austin also has many private and charter school options.
