The hospital is a not-for-profit 875-bed medical center across four campuses. It has provided acute care and surgical services to Des Moines community since 1893. The hospital's Women & Infants Center includes labor and delivery, a mother/baby recovery unit, a maternity triage and treatment unit, 24-hour well-baby nursery, and a 44-bed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Local attractions include the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, Blank Park Zoo, East Village, Living History Farms, State of Iowa Historical Museum, State Capitol Building, and pedestrian-friendly downtown, featuring an extensive, four-mile skywalk system.
Des Moines is served by Des Moines Public Schools, Carlisle Community Schools, Johnson Community School District, Southeast Polk Community School District and Saydel School District. The area is also home to several private schools.
The city's institutions of higher education include Drake University, Grand View University, Simpson College, Upper Iowa University, William Penn University, University of Phoenix, Vatterott College, Des Moines Area Community College, AIB College of Business and Des Moines University, an osteopathic medical school.
