Monterey, California

The Location

Monterey is located on California's central coast on the southern edge of Monterey Bay. The city is home to 27,000 residents and is conveniently located 115 miles south of San Francisco and 350 miles north of Los Angeles. Monterey is just minutes from Pebble Beach and Carmel-by-the-Sea.

In the 1930s and 1940s, Monterey was the sardine capital of the world with a thriving fishing industry. Today, the city is home to a smaller commercial fishing fleet, with the local economy powered by healthcare, private sector businesses, education and government.

Once a key military outpost, Monterey maintains its military tradition with the Defense Language Institute, the Naval Postgraduate School and Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center.

Monterey residents enjoy a mild year-round climate with cool summer months (the average temperature is 59.5 degrees) and a warm "Indian Summer" autumn.

Arts and Entertainment

From the shores of Monterey Bay to the pine forests on the city's hillsides, Monterey is a beautiful place to get outside and enjoy nature. See sea otters, pelicans and seals in their natural habitat at the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, whale watch at Fisherman's Wharf, relax on the beach, charter a boat, surf, kayak, paddleboard, hike or camp. Monterey is also home to a sports center, tennis center and city ball fields.

For arts, culture and dining enthusiasts, there is plenty to do. Visit the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, enjoy shopping, dining and entertainment at Cannery Row, made famous by John Steinbeck, tour historic adobes, take a scenic drive to Big Sur or sample wine on a wine trolley tour.

Education

Monterey is home to three public school districts: Carmel Unified School District, Monterey Peninsula Unified School District and Pacific Grove Unified School District.

Monterey also has several higher education institutions, including California State University at Monterey Bay, Brandman University, Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, Monterey College of Law, Monterey Peninsula College, Pacific Grove Adult Education, Defense Language Institute & Foreign Language Center and Naval Postgraduate School.
