OBHG clinicians Dr. Susan Passarella, certified nurse-midwife Lisa Weston, and Dr. Candace Wilson were each recently recognized by their coworkers and hospitals for outstanding achievement. We are proud to congratulate these clinicians for their dedication to leadership within their facilities, excellent mentorship of OB residents, and compassionate patient-centered care.

Dr. Susan Passarella, Site Director of Ob Hospitalists for Ocean Medical Center in Brick, New Jersey, was named the hospital's 2019 Nurses’ Choice Physician of the Year.

Ocean Medical nurse Judy Sweeney who submitted the nomination wrote:

“Dr. Passarella applies her own knowledge and skills to help the staff on maternity be the best they can be.

She has been a catalyst for changing the view in nursing by assisting with our Dyad projects of postpartum hemorrhage and severe hypertension readiness on our maternity unit. Her ability to bring everyone together as a team on these projects helps to maintain the high standards of not only our unit, but also our hospital. Her intensive knowledge and vast expertise have made these projects easier to implement with an experienced physician to turn to.

Dr. Passarella embodies the standards expected for a physician of the year. Over the past year, I have come to realize she is extremely conscientious and always working to create a positive environment. Colleagues, patients and nurses alike hold her in high regard for her friendly, calm, pleasant manner, as well as her willingness to offer professional support whenever or wherever needed.

She handles herself with the utmost professionalism and integrity. We, in the Maternity unit, have grown reliant upon Dr. Passarella's expertise and leadership qualities that has made her extremely deserving of this Physician of the Year Award.”

Certified nurse-midwife Lisa Weston, a member of the OBHG team at Providence Alaska Medical Center, was recently honored by the Providence Alaska Medicine Residency Program residents as the 2018-2019 Community Attending Teacher of the Year.

The Alaska Family Medicine residents wrote:

“While we are grateful to the many community providers who give of their time and expertise to supervise and teach and mentor us, Lisa stands out from the rest. She has relentlessly advocated for and supported residents through challenging situations and has been a supremely kind and dependable person to go to for help. Moreover, she is a role model for us with regard to patient-centered care and meeting women where they are.

Lisa is an exemplar of patience and empathy and creative problem solving when it comes to working with women in vulnerable situations. All of us residents, and the women we will care for in the future, are better off for having spent time with Lisa Weston."

PAMC Midwife Site Director Tanya Kirk added, “The Alaska OBHG team functions as volunteer attending faculty for the Providence family residency program. The residents have a complex and diverse OB service with a large portion of underserved and financially vulnerable patients. We aim to offer exemplary education as a pillar of midwifery services. Congratulations to Lisa for this recognition of her talent as both a midwife and educator.”

Dr. Candace Wilson was recently named Physician of the Month at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster, Maryland.

Dr. Wilson was recognized for her extraordinary and compassionate care of a patient during her delivery in the hospital’s Family Birthplace.

"Dr. Wilson is an excellent physician who always goes above and beyond for her patients. Her care and compassion are invaluable to patients as they experience one of the most memorable experiences of their lives," said Dr. Mark Olszyk, vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer at Carroll Hospital.

Each month, Carroll Hospital recognizes the extraordinary patient care achievements of physicians and other medical professionals with a program called Practitioner/Physician WOW Service Awards.
